What is the significance of the first Amendment with speech and press?

Without the first amendment our country would have a lot of problems. The people of the United States run on their freedom of speech and the press. Its significance in our world today is almost untraceable because it is so important. The first amendment allows the people to complain about anything that they don’t like, for example the government. If the people are upset about something they can raise their voices and not get in trouble. As we read about in a recent chapter, the media has become a watchdog against government and informs the people of everything they do.

With mass media being such an important part of our daily lives today, the first amendment is the reason to why mass media has even gotten to the point that it is at today. Imagine living in a country like China or North Korea where you don’t hear any news about the government and its faults, or any bad news about countries around you. Without the first amendment you lose a lot of freedoms that you wouldn’t normally think about.

The first amendment has gotten a lot of people out of trouble in the Supreme Court. I have heard several cases recently where someone has said something and then someone else took them to court and it was protected under part of the first amendment. Could you imagine saying something and then going to jail for slander? If our country did not have the first amendment our prisons would be disturbingly even more over capacitated.
