How has mass media technology changed the way audiences are entertained?

In prehistoric times, entertainment was sitting by a campfire. Then there was paintings on cave walls telling stories. Technology driven entertainment began with movable type in the 1440s. Wider audiences could access literature. Then literature adapted to new media. Movies, radio, and television expanded. Movie versions of books became popular. Music was everywhere. With mass media technology, master storytellers and musicians could have large audiences that were unimaginable in earlier times. High caliber entertainment became available.

Today, people take less responsibility for creating entertainment and have become consumers. They don’t have to leave their homes for entertainment. The Internet, television and radio are all within reach. In fact, all entertainment can be found on the Internet. You can watch your favorite musicians concert, new movies, recently aired television, and sports. While some people like the comfort of their own homes and their high definition television, some still enjoy the atmosphere of a live setting. Concerts are in arenas that hold more people than ever before and use huge screens to broadcast the show to the audience members who can seen the actual performer. What the audience views as entertainment has not changed with technology, just the way we watch it.
