The word estate comes from a type of highly structured description that places people into classes. Mass media has become a great highly structured medium that it has been called the fourth estate. Over time it has become known as the fourth branch of government. Its job has become to monitor other branches as a check on behalf of the mass audience. The point of this watchdog is to keep “tabs on the rascals in power to keep them honest”. The new branch helps keep mass audiences aware of any corruption or scandals that occur within the government.
