What is the significance of the fourth estate?

The fourth estate applies to journalists and relates to the “independent role of the media in reporting on the government.” The government must play a role in the media due to the fact that there are so many rules and regulations that must be followed. The fourth state is also referred to as a watchdog due to the fact that the government must watch over what media releases.
