In what ways do media and advertising work together?

Media and advertising must work together because one could not exist without the other. Media gains most of its profits from their advertising spots. Most newspapers, magazines, TV stations etc. are more advertising than they are the actual news or entertainment. In fact, there is a TV show dedicated to the funniest advertisements; the commercials are also a very important part of the Super Bowl every year.
Without media, advertisers would have no vehicle to supply their messages to viewers. There would be no advertising firms, departments, designers and no message at all. Without advertisements and media working together, how would information about new technology and ideas circle the world? They wouldn't and we would have an under informed generation of investors.
