Which audience analysis measurements principles and techniques are most effective and why?

Today, media has vast resources to learn about their audiences. Audience analyses are measured through surveys, public opinion polls, and ratings. These are the most effective ways for mass media to know the number and kinds of people they reach. Through surveys and ratings, media learns what kind of advertisements to run and where. Through public opinion polls, audiences provide statistical information that can be incredibly accurate. These traditional resources were in fact very effective in helping the mass media analyze their audiences.

However, I feel that the most effective technique would be the devices made to track the usage of new media forms. The most effective device for measuring audiences would be meters. In the 1970's, meters were used tracked what channel was on. As technology progressed, devices tracked not only what was on television but also who was watching. It continued to track away-from-home audiences who spent their time at sport bars or offices. This was a more accurate way of getting information.
