In What Ways do Media and Advertising Work Together?

Media and advertising are like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. They work better together. Sure you could survive with a peanut butter sandwich, or just jelly, but it wouldn't be very successful and not as many people would like it. The media and advertisements rely off each other.
Typically, most media audiences aren't watching/listening/viewing for the advertisements or to be persuading into buying something. But, I think many people are aware that without advertisements, most of this media would be non-existant and without a large portion of their funds.
Advertisements all originated from William Caxton who printed the first advertisement. From there, John Campbell proceeded to publish the first advertisement in the British colonies. During the Industrial Revolution, Benjamin Day's "penny papers" brought advertisements to a new level seeing as these papers were very inexpensive and released everyday.
Wayland Ayer founded the first ad agency, and nowadays the leading advertisers in the United States are Procter & Gamble, AT&T, Verizon, General Motors, Time Warner and Ford. These organizations, in addition to many other companies, are a major component of modern economies.
There are many types of advertising. They vary from ads in games, brands, or search engines to ads that are so redundant it's nearly impossible that the audience doesn't get the message. But, no matter where the ads are, they are/working with media in some shape or form. Without the media, advertisements would not be able to get their point across as clearly or easily.
