Media literacy is the understanding of the dynamics that influence media messages. Media messages swarm and engross our daily lives through several outlets. Television, billboards, radio stations and emails all present us with media messages that are strongly omnipresent. In order to control the influences of media literacy you must acquire both awareness and understanding to the messages being displayed. Subconsciously the mind can digest hundreds of messages a day, the exact number depending on what we expose ourselves to.
When watching the nightly news we are submerging ourselves into mass media messages. The messages we receive from news and other sources of media influence our daily decisions. As time progresses the general population becomes more influenced by the media because of how much time they spend using media. Millions of people can be reached by using media. In 1930 President Roosevelt used the radio as a tool to reach a larger audience, in order to win the popular vote. In 2010 mass communication is used by politicians through television advertisements, live debates, and social networking in order infiltrate the homes of the general population and influence voters decisions. With the proper usage of the different mediums a politicians can turn the tides of an election.
Media messages will continue to be the largest source of communication. Media literacy allows us to understand and analyze messages. Being able to sift through the information at hand and evaluate the importance defines media literacy.
