What is Media Literacy?

Media Literacy is being able to acquire an understanding and knowledge of the mass media. Media Literacy is an important knowledge to obtain in this day and age due to the enormous amount of mass communication that consumes our everyday lives. This ability to examine and analyze the messages that inform and persuade us everyday to buy is an important factor in understanding how media production works and how these factors influence us on a daily basis. Some of the ways in which we can obtain an understanding of Media Literacy is through Message Form, Message vs. Messenger, Motivation Awareness, Media Limitations, Traditions, and Media Myth. All of these media awareness require people to really think about what they are reading and seeing on a daily basis. Being able to differentiate whom the message is intended for and what the message is trying to portray also plays an important role in acquiring media literacy. This day and age is filled with distractions and commercialism that influence our daily lives. Most of us are not even aware of how much time we spend searching the web. We become so consumed within the media that we don’t realize how it can affect us unless we acquire this understanding of Media Literacy.
