Media literacy is the ability to take messages relayed from the media and break them down to understand the overall concept, not just the minor details. Although people may think they have a vast knowledge of the media, there are many hidden and unnoticed messages that the media portrays that people tend not to see. If you are media “literate”, one will be able to adhere to the hidden messages, such as a small photo in a window of a shop that may be significant.
There are multiple types of methods when understanding the media. A message forum, for example, is identifying a one-on-one message compared to a mass message. Here we can conclude that the target markets of an advertisement or mass message may vary. It is also very important to understand that the messenger of a message may not always be the culprit. Many media related events are not always true. A significant piece of being media literate is identifying the correct meaning of the message. Basically, when viewing a media message, do not be fooled.
Media literacy can determine how one portrays society. It can be tough to be tricked by the media and its false advertisements and portrayals but if one can evaluate the true message of a media event, they will be able to overcome many societal steriotypes and mislead views.
