What is Media Literacy?

Media literacy by definition is “competence or knowledge about the mass media” (Vivian p6). Media literacy means so much more than that to me. People today need to not only know about the media, but also know how to use it, and with that, use it well. Not being able to use the vehicles for media properly and expecting to succeed in the world today is like walking into a Fortune 500 company expecting to get a job off a reference from being a fry-cook at McDonalds.

Everyday the world around us is changing, not even changing, but progressing and so is the mass media. According to the Associated Press the average American household has more televisions than people in it, that’s insane considering that up until John Logie Baird invented the television, as we know it now, in 1926 radio was the way the spread news.

As the world turns so are minds around the world increasing the amount of mass media out there and also the vehicles to propel it. Media literacy is now becoming knowledge and ability to use the mass media around us, and using the vehicles of media properly and always being on top of the game when it comes down to upgrading the technology behind it.
