The Gatekeepers of News and the Effectiveness of Investigative Reporting on Informing the Public

A gatekeeper is a news staff person who decides which stories will be pursued, what about the story will be told, deciding what needs to be told and how. The purpose of the gatekeeper is to use good news judgment in trimming stories, because not all news can be reported due to practicalities. The gatekeeper works behind the scenes. The gatekeeper is a key figure in deciding what the public will be informed about and how much information they will be given.
Investigative reporting, an in-depth approach to news, dates back to the muckraking period in history. Investigative reporting is the type of reporting that reveals new information that most official news sources would not report because of its startling content. Investigative reporting is still used in news reporting today. The use of the internet on mass communication has affected all aspects of journalism, including investigative reporting. As explained in the text, the internet is transforming news gathering and redefining news practices and audience expectations.
