For years, the movie industry was America's #1 form of entertainment. Everyone went to the movies, and the business was at its peak when David sarnoff created the first successful television network that was lisenced by the FCC in 1941. For years ABC, CBS, and NBC where the "big three." NBC dominating at first but they eventually each had 200 affiliates. Now, the cable media conglomerates consist of Disney, NBC Universal, News Corp., Time Warner, and Viacom. In the movie industry the "big six" studios consist of Paramount, Disney, Columbia, 20th century fox, Universal, and Warner.
Many of these companies have diversifed and became conglomerations in both the movie and television industries. Conglomeration has changed the movie and television industries because now all of the popular shows and movies we watch are controlled by a group of major companies. For the conglomerates, the blend of the movie and TV industries has been great because they profit from both industries. This is a good thing for the companies, but is it good for us? These few large companies have complete power of so many aspects of entertainment, and they pretty much control everything we see. Smaller companies really dont even have a chance to succeed with these conglomerates dominating the two major markets of entertainment.
