Gatekeepers are the people who control what information is released on the news to the public. They filter information to make sure it is appropriate for all ages, related to the topic, make sure it follows length guidelines, and so on. They work behind the scenes, deciding which stories will be pursued.
Investigative reporting is very effective in informing the public. Muckraking can be defined by it’s name, muck-raking, raking the muck. In doing so, stories are uncovered and revealed that wouldn’t normal be released by more official news sources. Investigators get the real meat of the story, no matter how shocking or inappropriate, mostly involving crimes, scandals, or politics.
